Pongal Chaadam or Pongal Saadam or Manjal Chaadam or Manjal Saadam Recipe

Yields: 1/2 cup
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Pressure Cooking time for Rice and Dal: 1 whistle

Raw Rice – 1/4 cup
Moong Dal/Paasi Paruppu – 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Water – 1/2 cup
Salt – a pinch (optional)


  1. Wash the rice and dal together in a vessel.
  2. Pressure cook the rice and dal with water and turmeric powder (and salt, if using), for about 1 whistle or until the rice is cooked.
  3. Serve.


  1. This rice is prepared usually for Pongal and Aadi Perukku by Tamil families based in Tirunelveli and Palakkad.
  2. This rice is usually had with coconut bits and grated jaggery as sides.
